what are watertoweres really used for?

if you live in any developed area , chances are you have seen several water towers in your area.

what are they? this baffled me a while back , I just decided to look it up...

      they store water , its simple , when too much water is treated to use immediatly , it is put in the tower(lol, it once had been "shower") , meanwhile , at 7:00 AM(07:00)when everyone brushes there teeth , hops in the shower , etc... when there isn't enough water to supply the demand , the water the water towers stored overnight comes out to help supply the high demand , or if thre is a shortage , they are also helpful.  they do nothing other than this.    so the water towers are what keeps the water coming out at normal pressure.
people try to build enough water towers so , if full , they can provide a full day of water if the treatment facilities should fail.
