Outside Funding

Funding, as I said before, is probably the single largest hurdle to getting a project like this one off the ground.  While I think community investment of the type I've described previously will have to be the cornerstone of any funding efforts, there are a number of other possibilities for soliciting contributions.  And, as any project manager will tell you, there is no such thing as too much budget!

There are two broad areas from which outside funding might be forthcoming;  Let's look at both in turn.

Building Investor Confidence and Relieving Donation Anxiety

As I mentioned in my initial post, the most difficult part of this entire process is to sell people on the idea of paying for the game before it's developed.  Now, this isn't a totally foreign concept, as plenty of people have no problem with pre-ordering games they are excited about.  But clearly, with this model there are some key differences:

1. The timeframe is much longer;  From the time the funding goals are met to the time the game is produced will be at least several years.
2. The uncertainty is much greater;  People pre-ordering a game can at least be reasonably certain the game is mostly finished and will actually be released.
