Why are kids so spoiled?

Haven't you ever noticed how little kids are spoiled? They sometimes have things that you don't have! Like, why would a 5yr old need a cell phone?! Or a 4yr old needing a laptop? Even preteens don't need them! Parents need to learn that spoiling kids rotten can ruin their social status later on in their life, they will be so stuck up and everything. All they are going to do is either put their phone in their mouth ( XD ) or spill drinks and destroy their computer! Also, why do they deserve those kinds of technologies? In summary, parents, stop spoiling your kids rotten X( !

Patricius Maximus's Gravatar Are kids these days spoiled? The answer is no more spoiled than your generation was. Throughout history, the old people have tried to put young people under their iron grip because they gripe that the young people have been "spoiled", when in fact the generation before them said they were spoiled as well. Human progress continues regardless, so I am convinced that no such phenomenon exists.

On your other point, Technology is shared across the entire human race, not just a select class of people that you happen to think deserve it.

The question is not whether a certain class of people you deem inferior "deserve technology" (as if it was some gift brought down by a benevolent slavemaster), but rather why they do not deserve technology.

Look down the highway the next time you drive. You will see a lot of people in SUVs talking on cell phones, most of the time blabbing about nothing. How does this group people merit technology, while another group does not?

The answer is age. In American society, everything is determined and segregated by the day you were born. If you were born after a certain date (18 years ago), you are deemed in effect a non-person, and are considered the property of the state, to be done away with, herded, and coerced as the state deems fit. How is this ethical? How is this moral? To consider a class of your fellow sapient beings your property and to subject them to your iron grip is the most egregious violation of the innate rights of sapient beings that I can imagine.

It is also quite offensive of you to presume that any of these people do not need any technology. A mistake you make is to assume that instead of being individuals, that they are somehow like the Borg, all alike and homogenous, and will be treated as an ambiguous collective entity.

What about them as INDIVIDUALS? Consider them as INDIVIDUALS, and if it is your money, determine BY THEIR INDIVUDUAL MERIT whether or not you want to buy a laptop for another PERSON with your money. But by no means say that if you were born after a certain date, then you are automatically disqualified from possessing laptops or cell phones. There are 4-year-olds who don't need cell phones; there are 4-year-olds who do need cell phones. Similarily, there are 40-year-olds who don't need cell phones, and 40-year-olds who do need cell phones.

To put Martin Luther King's words in the context of the present struggle for rights:

"I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by when they were born, but by the content of their character."

"I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: 'We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal."

Innovations's Gravatar I'd agree with Patricious Maximus. It's actually really true. Everyone should be able to have technology but to a certain extent. I've never seen little kids with Laptops or cell phones before...

3dpuzzlemaster's Gravatar Yeah, what Patricius said was true, I want to restate one sentence though, Why do kids really need a laptop of their own, I mean, it is okay if a kid can use one, just as long as it really isn't their own. Yeah, it also must be rare for you guys, but where I live, every toddler basically has a phone, some with laptops! But, I guess that is what you get with soccer moms. XD

blakesterville's Gravatar I am 14, and don't have a cell phone or girlfriend. Want to know a secret, though? I am happy the way that I am.
At the same time, I don't think that it is wrong to have a cell-phone, girlfriend, etc...(4 year old is different, but please realize that about every kid in america has probably asked for stuff like that.) It does, however, become wrong if it gets in the way of moral character. As a Christian, I really care about morality. When people are so sucked into cell-phones that they get into stuff they know they should stay away from, thats when there is a problem.

Yes, kids(especially) teens(we teens too.) and adults(though not nearly as much as even teens) are all incredibly spoiled.

Animaniacs's Gravatar Finally! someone noticed! about 71% of the kids in my school have and get almost EVERYTHING they want!

I'm hearing some girls mumbling that they cant join a certain club because they don't have a cell phone! that's horrible! My sister is very spoiled; if she does'nt get what she wants, she'll kick and scream and cry and all that stuff! It's like having a Veruca in my family!

I don't have a camera, video player, or an ipod home, but she does! the whole spoiled thing is tyranny! kids like that should be punished, if not, the parents or the grandparents or whoever's doing it! >:c

confused04's Gravatar Let me be the first to completely DISAGREE with Patricius Maximus... again. Below the age of 18, most people are incapable of living on their own and haven't developed or been entirely socialized. Yes, its an arbitrary age and yes people do mature at different rates but we don't have the resources to say "Hey, you are now officially a citizen because you've past x tests and meet y criteria" (that's dabbling in a bit of authoritarianism). I honestly don't believe you think that 4 year old should have the right to vote so really I find this "I'm oppressed because I'm younger than 18" to be rather inane!

No one considers people below the age of 18 to be "property" so you can really discontinue that line of thought. Children do have rights and can't be damaged like property without severe consequences.

I do agree that children should be given access to technology based on their needs and abilities, that I can agree with. But as a society, we don't treat children as "second class citizens". There is just no reason to treat a child EXACTLY as you'd treat a 30 year old. Children/minors below the age of 18 aren't oppressed... just whiny.
