New Article: 02/19/10

Now Accepting: Your Articles!

Have an article idea, big, bigger, or - excuse my french - grandeur? Put it to work for the community as an Omnibus article! We're open to a wide range of topics, from SC4 to CXL to SCS, and even the older sim games! Have an idea for a tutorial on Simtropolis based content (eg. CJ tutorials, Blog tutorials, etc.)? Look no further!

Now, by this point you're probably wondering how the heck you get your article on the Omnibus. It's easy, I assure you! Just ask one of the SHS members, and they will be glad to partner up with you, and be the SHS Liaison for your tutorial.  Your liaison will be there to give you insight into what makes a successful tutorial, what works and what doesn't, not write it for you, so don't worry; your project will be just that, yours!

And that's it! We look forward to hearing from all of you in the future, teeming with article ideas! :D

Phone lines are now.... open!

Article of the Week: How to Make a Roadless City

Build me a city! Roads: Optional. It's now possible, with just a few plugins and help from Schulmanator's How To Make a Roadless City tutorial!

With the help of this tutorial, you can create fully functional towns.. without roads! Use this to create old style English hamlets, funky entertainment districts of downtown or a modern carless neighborhood! The possibilities are endless with a bit of creativity and the help of Schulmanator's tutorial. Hopefully you agree with us that this tutorial is an excellent resource for CJers, and the casual player alike!

Welcome to the New Omnibus!

As I'm sure you have all seen by now, the Omnibus has been moved out of the forums and is now using a Wiki software! I'd first like to thank my fellow SHSers for their assistance in moving all the articles over. It was an imposing job, but we've got most of it done without (many) complaints! ;)

I'd like to talk a minute about some of the features the new Omnibus now has.

  • Ability to search within the Omnibus
  • Listing of all articles on the main page, with a handy Table of Contents!
  • Streamlined system to get YOUR articles on the Omnibus
In the coming months, we should have a system to allow anyone to submit articles to the Omnibus! Exciting! In the meantime, stay tuned for that and other updates!

Article of the Week: How to Make Eye-Pleasing Realistic Beaches

Welcome back! This week, we have a timeless tutorial, a guide on sculpting realistic beaches for your cities. Although the tools may change as new and improved lots come out, the essentials of this tutorial remain. It stands as an excellent guide for users both new and old.

The guide will take you through all the needed steps, right from sculpting the original land around the sea to adding the fine details in a boardwalk or surrounding golf course. It will also provide examples and suggestions of things to do with your beaches to create the ideal resort area for your sims. Hopefully you can find great use from this tutorial!

The tutorial can be found here.

Article of the Week: BAT Essentials

Hello again, everyone and welcome back to our Article of the Week feature. Apologies for the recent lapse in updating the past few weeks, RLS had been catching up with many on the team. Regardless, here we are now with this weeks feature.. keeping in tune with our last feature, we have another old article.. the first comprehensive guide on all basic areas of the BAT: the BAT Essentials tutorial by philippbo.

For any new BATters, this tutorial should be among their first stops in getting started. It takes you through step by step from the first spline to the last texture through the basic areas you will need to know to fashion a building of your own.. and even shows some common mistakes and errors that may occur along the way! Truly a stellar resource for anyone taking their first steps into creating custom content.

The tutorial can be found here, in the Omnibus.

Article of the Week: Simtropolis Glossary

Hello everyone, welcome to our first 'Article of the Week' feature. This week we're featuring one of the oldest articles on Simtropolis, the Simtropolis Glossary. For years the glossary has been a prime resource for new and old members alike when trying to figure out the meaning of any of the hundreds of terms used here on ST.

The Glossary was relaunched yesterday with new and updated definitions, and a easy-to-navigate format. This truly was a group effort that involved all members of the SHS working hard to update terms and get the Glossary looking pretty. We hope you enjoy this great resource!

The glossary is located in the Omnibus, here.
To submit terms or definitions to the Simtropolis Glossary, PM any SHS member. A list of members can be found here.

Welcome to the Official SHS Blog

Hello everyone, and welcome to the official SHS blog. This blog will serve to keep the community up to date with SHS and Simtropolis Omnibus happenings. We're still in the process of getting this set up, so expect to see this place looking prettier in the coming days. In the meantime, here is a general overview of the types of blogs posts you'll see here:

  • New Articles: Whenever a new article is uploaded to the Omnibus, we'll notify you here. These blog posts will be short (think twitter) and will simply provide a link to the new article. If more than one article is uploaded in a day, they will be put in the same post.
  • Article of the Week: These posts will come once a week and will showcase one article from the Omnibus. These posts will be significantly longer than the 'New Articles' posts, as they will feature a write-up about the article itself. The article could be old or new, and we haven't quite decided how we're going to decide which articles make the cut, but we will obviously only be showcasing particularly interesting and/or well written articles.
  • SHS/Omnibus News: These posts will come intermittently and will inform the community of general SHS/Omnibus  happenings. This post that you're reading right now is an example.
That's all for now, be sure to check this page often, and enjoy the new blog section everyone!
